Day 2: Beckley to Uxbridge

5:00 in the morning comes quick.  By 6:00 we were on the road, and finding ourselves in need of a gas station.

Fueling up.

Remarkably, our little car has been getting about 32 or 33 miles per gallon on the highway - even with the cruise control locked in at 80 mph.

Rest stop.

West Virginia goes on, and on, and on, and on … we had to stop for a pee break somewhere in northern West Virginia.

Welcome to Pennsylvania!

West Virginia always gets a bad rap on our trips.  To go from tip to tip takes at least 4 hours; it feels like a hundred.  We were not unhappy to enter Pennsylvania.

Towards Buffalo

10:45, and we’re already past Erie, PA.  You can tell from the photos that we didn’t exactly have great weather for the drive.  Better to have the crappy weather now, than when we’re in Toronto!

The Last Toll Booth

At about 1:00 in the afternoon, we hit our last toll booth in the United States.

Buffalo, NY is a funny city.  It has its beautiful spots, but it really does have some run-down areas as well.  For as long as I can remember, I have always noticed this particular building.  I guess Battenfeld American makes some sort of lubricants?  I can only imagine what it was like to work inside of this gritty looking building.

Battenfeld

Finally, we made it to the border.  Customs was a breeze; I have a few simple rules that always seem to help at the border: take off my sunglasses, turn off the radio, roll down the window completely, maintain constant eye contact with the border guard, and answer politely with “yes sir, no sir” or “yes m’am, no m’am”.  It also helps that we’re not smuggling in anything illegal, so we really have nothing to lie about.

Back in Canada!

We always breathe a collective sigh of relief when we’re back in Canada.  Pretty soon, we see highway exit signs for Tim Horton’s, and familiar place names.  It’s always a good feeling.

Getting closer!

Traffic got a little crazy when we were going across the 403, but it didn’t end up costing us that much time.  Imagine our relief when we finally hit the 404!  Only forty more minutes until we’re at the farm!

Almost home!

We made it to the farm safe and sound … stay tuned for more of our adventures!
