Four more sleeps until my trip to the Big Smoke (aka Toronto).
Road trips have always excited me. When I was a child, we did the drive from Toronto to Buffalo (to visit family) enough that I could actually recite all the highway exit numbers by heart. The McDonalds just off the highway in St. Catherines became all too familiar … and when I started making my own money at the ripe age of 13, I never bothered to convert my American money back to Canadian, since it would probably be a matter of weeks before we were back for another family visit.
I’m excited about this trip for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is getting to spend some quality time with my family and friends. Going back has always helped me “ground” myself, and that usually happens when I visit places that are an important part of my past.
My separation from Carolyn has given this an entirely different (and much more somber) tone, but it’s a ritual I’ll still partake of. At the least, I’m planning on visiting Lindsay and Peterborough (my old college towns), and perhaps Guelph and Cambridge (the cities where Carolyn and I first cohabitated). The latter were important parts of our relationship, but they were also pivotal cities in my own evolution, and I wish to honour them as such.
I will also visit my favorite antique store in Beaverton, where I will do my best to keep my wallet in check.
And, of course, I will have my camera and camcorder with me to “blog” the experience.
Happy trails!
