When I was 5, my next-door neighbour got an Atari 2600. I was filled with envy; having a computer (a timex sinclair ZX-81) was cool and all, but there was something about being able to play Asteroids on a moment’s notice that could fill any child’s heart with longing. Alas, my father wouldn’t have any of it, and I never knew the pleasure of a game machine.
This wasn’t a bad thing; having a “real” computer allowed me to plunge into the world of programming, and some of my fondest memories were spent typing in games from magazines like “Computer Gazette”.
Alas, my unbroken 31-year stretch of abstinence from game machines was broken today. We bought a Wii.
